Byong Ku LEE

I am writer.

Who I Am

Whenever I give a speech or presentation, I introduce myself this way: "My name is Byong Ku Lee. 'Byong' means illness, and 'Ku' means worm - so together, it means an ill worm." It's a light-hearted way to break the ice - and it comes with an unexpected benefit: nobody ever forgets my name. I'm comfortable lowering myself in front of others, thanks largely to my mother's enduring advice: "You were born in a cowshed. Never be arrogant; always stay humble."

RAYDEL GROUP (www.raydelgroup.com) Founder & CEO

I was born in 1955, during a time of extreme poverty in Korea following the Korean War (1950–1953). Most of my childhood was marked by hunger and hard labor. Due to my family’s difficult financial situation, I had to leave school in the fourth grade of elementary school. I worked during the day and attended a night middle school, eventually earning my middle school diploma. In 1982, I immigrated to Australia with just $600. To make a living, I worked various jobs, including as a sewing machinist, construction laborer, and cleaner. With the money I saved through those years, I purchased a small health food store in 1986. After overcoming countless challenges, I grew the business into a global healthcare company with an annual revenue of $70 million.
